going back
this weekend we went back to good ol' audubon park where the birds were making such a racket. we haven't been there in forever; it's funny how moving a few miles up the road, to a different neighborhood completely changes the city you live in. we go to a different daily grocery store, different regular restaurant, different walks with miles, different theater, shopping, see totally different set of people every day. bizarre. this town is not that big, yet it's enough to contain so many different subsets...

thinking ahead
this weekend we're going to breaux bridge. it's cajun country, la with real live alligators and signs in french. not that we don't have those things in the n.o. too but they feel authentic there. we're staying at a friend's parents' inn and i'm expecting loads of charm, amazing food, and maybe some croquet and brunch dancing. and lots of good photo opportunities of course.
thinking ahead, this weekend kicks off a lot of fun summer travel. camping at "the property" and a trip to florida, a maine wedding (staying at the boathouse!), a d.c. wedding, and sailing with friends. not to mention lots of trips to the redneck riviera...
hopefully r.'s parents will come visit for a while too so there will be an excuse to do those touristy things like go on swamp tours and take day trips.
does anybody else living in subtropics love summer?

change the outside
i need to paint my house. it's mardi gras colors which is both completely appropriate and inappropriate for new orleans. i was thinking taupe body with a natural door and aqua shutters or green/yellow with teal shutters and natural door. kindof like these mock-ups i tried...
there's a slate box underneath the enormous bush in front which is actually quite pretty (the box, not the bush. the bush: i can't even talk about-- it looks at tho it is eating our house.) i want to put bougainvilleas and poppy's and succulents and something tall and spindle-y and yellow, etc in the currently-hidden box to achieve this color palette:
i like the look of tamed wildness, not the oh-we-just-plum-forgot-about-that look. like this:

compound dreams
there's some land in my neighborhood, i don't even know if it's for sale, but it would be perfect for to build two houses back-to-back, separated by a yard with a pool. then you could live in one, and your friends could live in the other and all the dogs could run around and swim with y'all in between.

pizz(j)azz fest
this is the second weekend of jazzfest and to be a good sport and not such an gosh darn old lady i'm going. i will sit in the hot sun and drink too much and eat too much and lose my friends (because of the wandering not because i am cranky) and be happy that i went.
and i think i will wear my star sandals.

aging beautifully
these make me feel nostalgic for last week.
i remember when i was in school how black and white photography made everything look dramatic or profound or beautiful. how we were taught that we should only use color film if color were really necessary to tell the story or convey the emotion.
now with digital, everything's in color...there seems to be very little thought in making images anymore. why should there be when 300 high res will fit on a card?
i feel a bit nostalgic for school and for that feeling like i was doing something new. going back to hobbies or passions after a few years makes me feel at once old pro and amateur again. i can dig it.

a smidge too late
and i mean but a millisecond! and another one happened about 1 second before that: there were two ducks lingering outside the art museum looking for all the world like they were about to go ahead inside and check things out.
but alas, such is the nature of photography i s'pose, what with the moment and all...

first time in a long while
it was just a test roll and i can't find the dohickey in my scanner that keeps the negs flat, but i sure am glad i picked up my old holga. the dreamy hazy blurry and often blue quality captures the slow and slightly sinister spirit of the bayous and small towns around new orleans.
and of course, it seems it just wouldn't be a post lately without a picture of miles:
